House Rules: Making the Dorm a Better Place to Live In
College students who are on a scholarship grant do have common dilemmas. Because their budget is usually just enough to cover for their board and lodging expenses, they have limited choices when it comes to choosing an accommodation. Thus, they often end up having a stranger for a roommate. This would definitely be a problem if you have never tried sharing a bedroom with anyone before. Before you can actually spend long hours with him or her chatting in your common quarters and adjust to this kind of situation, there are a few things that need to be worked on. These few important rules might help.
1. Have respect for one’s personal space. Never go to anyone’s room if you are not invited. Otherwise, you risk violating the privacy of others. Remember that there are certain boundaries that must not be crossed, especially when the area is divided into separate corners.
2. Show courtesy. It is wrong to assume that other people share the same taste as you when it comes to décor and furnishings. Those posters on the wall may not be to their liking. In fact, those may even annoy them. Also, the habit of leaving things on the couch after school may not sit well with them as well. To be safe, talk it out with him or her to avoid any trouble.
3. Share in some chores. Do not wait on others to do the cleaning. An efficient strategy would be to agree on a schedule when each of you will have to do a certain routine to keep the place tidy. Some of the recurring housekeeping tasks include doing the dishes and dusting or washing the windows.
4. Compromise a bit. Turn down the volume of your stereo while your roommate is studying. Likewise, get your clothes out of the dryer as soon as you are done to give way to others who also need to use the machine. Additionally, chip in what little things you can offer, whether it is a roll of toilet paper or a gallon of milk.
5. Observe bathroom etiquette. This is often a big issue, particularly for women. Little courtesies should be taken seriously. Mind the times that you spend in the shower. Also, have some consideration for cases when others need to use it in emergency situations.
In the end, if you think that all the measures you have tried simply do not work to enhance the quality of your dorm life, perhaps it is about time that you search for an alternative housing. When you start searching for a new roof, be frank about your requirements so that your wrong choices do not become a string of bad experiences.
